In spring 1912, Vienna witnessed a remarkable encounter between two prominent voices of the era: Peace Nobel Prize laureate Bertha von Suttner met with writer Karl May for a personal conversation during her stay in Vienna and also attended his final lecture in the city. The meeting was devoted to the great questions of the early 20th century – war, peace, and the individual's moral responsibility. It took place at the Hotel Krantz. This Viennese encounter impressively illustrates Bertha von Suttner's role as an intellectual catalyst and pioneer of pacifism. It stands as an example of Vienna as a place of dialogue where societal and ethical questions about the future were openly discussed – and continue to be discussed today. Detlef Rome
